CONNECTING THE HARD-TO-REACH AREAS: WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF SATELLITE SERVICES IN AFRICA?
1 billion people live in areas around the globe without access to 3G/4G services. 40% are in sub-Saharan Africa. This means more than 450 million people across Sub-Saharan Africa still have no access to a mobile broadband network, thus are digitally excluded and unable to enjoy the socio-economic benefits that mobile broadband can bring.
This connectivity gap exists mainly due to the high cost of traditional approaches for connecting rural communities. However, there are efficient, high-performing alternative approaches to closing the connectivity gap, not only in sub-Saharan Africa, but anywhere people live without access to the means to connect.
This session will examine the need for connectivity, the barriers to closing the connectivity gap, and satellite enabled solutions available today for quickly and economically deploying mobile coverage into rural and remote areas.
