Ben Saunders

World Record Breaking Polar Explorer and Repeat TED Speaker

Impossible is just someone's opinion

POLAR EXPLORER • ENDURANCE ATHLETE • MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER

Ben Saunders is one of the world’s leading polar explorers, and a record-breaking long-distance skier who has covered more than 6,000km (3,700 miles) on foot in the Polar Regions since 2001. His accomplishments include leading The Scott Expedition, the longest human-powered polar journey in history, and the first completion of the expedition that defeated Captain Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton, a 105-day round-trip from Ross Island on the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back again.

THE SCOTT EXPEDITION – ANTARCTICA 2013-14

In 2013-14, Ben and his teammate Tarka L’Herpiniere retraced the route of Captain Scott’s Terra Nova expedition for the first time. Walking from Ross Island, on the Antarctic coast, to the South Pole and back, while hauling 200kg (440lb) sleds with everything they needed to survive 108 days on the coldest, windiest, highest and driest continent on Earth. Ben and Tarka’s three-and-a-half-month, 2,913km (1801 mile) expedition set the Guinness World Record for the longest ever polar journey on foot.

ARCTIC EXPEDITIONS – 2008, 2009, 2011

Over a five-year period, Ben made three further North Pole solo attempts. In each instance, Ben’s expedition attempts were thwarted by poor weather conditions or equipment defects which meant he was unable to start/continue the expedition.

THE SERCO TRANSARCTIC EXPEDITION - NORTH POLE 2004

In 2004, Ben set out to ski solo from Russia to Canada across the frozen Arctic Ocean. He successfully reached the North Pole but on the second leg of the trek – to Canada – the sea ice began to break up and Ben was forced to call for a pick up. This journey has never been completed without support.

AUTHOUR & "TED TALKS" SPEAKER

In print, Ben is the author of Shackleton (A Ladybird Expert Book) and he has featured in ReWork by David Heinemeier Hansson and Jason Fried, The Rise by Sarah Lewis, and TED Talks: The Official TED Guide to Public Speaking by Chris Anderson.
